Growing up, I wished to become an astronomer, but I failed calculus. I trained to be an actress and singer, but I was shy. I admired risk-takers. I aspired to be confident. I wanted to help others communicate. To trust my instincts. And laugh. And love. Truthfully, I'm still working on growing up. (But not on the damn calculus.)

Mary Tyler Moore challenged gender norms and expectations -- as an actress, producer, social advocate, author, mother and wife. She defined a new vision of women, not only through her TV roles, but by openly sharing the personal struggles that gave her courage. She inspired me, and many women in my generation, to firmly believe that we could “make it after all."
